Congressman Upton Supports Credit Union's Not-for-Profit Tax Status

Members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation continue to offer their support for the credit union not-for-profit tax status. This week we are highlighting a statement by longtime credit union supporter Congressman Fred Upton (R-6-MI). Congressman Upton states, “Our credit unions provide essential financial services for folks here in Southwest Michigan and across the country. As we remain focused on growing our economy, these member-owned and controlled institutions are helping locally owned small businesses grow, invest, and create jobs in our communities. I will continue to stand by our Credit Unions and oppose raising taxes on these important community institutions. It’s clear – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

This fall, Congress is expected to debate and vote on reforms to the federal tax code. The effort will focus on changes that lead to economic growth. Policy leaders continue to discuss interest in simplifying the tax code and reducing the tax burden on American taxpayers and companies. The MCUL Government Affairs team will be monitoring tax reform discussions closely in conjunction with CUNA, and will communicate important developments as they become available.
