Dear Credit Union Leaders,

We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer.  Here are the updates you need!

Announcements

As a reminder, beginning in August, our monthly SAS Compliance Office Hours will be officially opened up to credit unions of all sizes. As a reminder, Compliance Office Hours are held at 9:00am on the first Friday of every month. The next session will be held on Aug. 2. For more information, please contact Brad (Bradley.Willett@mcul.org).

Advocacy

In Lansing, the State Legislature has recessed for the summer.  We expect their work to resume, substantively, after Labor Day.

In Washington, D.C., Congress has returned to work this past week.  The focus for the credit union industry remains monitoring proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) dealing with both interchange as well as the Overseas Military Banking Program.  America’s Credit Unions and the state leagues have sent a letter to the U.S. Senate indicating our opposition to any such amendments and advocating for a clean NDAA.  As well, U.S. Sens. Catherine Cortez Mastro (D-NV) and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) will propose an amendment related to the Federal Home Loan Bank system.  Our league partners are working with the sponsors, but concerns over this effort’s effects on the structure of the FHLBanks’ boards and credit unions’ ability to serve on such remain as we wait to see the language introduced.

For a full update on state and federal regulatory action, please see the “Reg Corner” update in this edition of MILeague Minute.

Grassroots and Advocacy Funding

Hike the Hill is approaching quickly, from Sept. 9-11 in Washington, D.C. For more information, please contact Todd (Todd.Jorns@mcul.org).

The rescheduled 2024 ASFM Golf Outing will take place on Sept. 6.  Our team is grateful to everyone for their patience and understanding of our need to move this event.  As a silver lining, we have re-opened registration if you are interested and the new date works for your teams.  You can register to golf here, and can also contribute as a sponsor for the event here by clicking “other” and entering a sponsorship amount. Please contact Kieran (Kieran.Marion@mcul.org) with any questions!

Elections

The biggest news of the election season by far came with the decision of U.S. President Joe Biden not to seek re-election this year.  With the Democratic National Convention looming in just a few weeks, Vice President Kamala Harris is working to secure the nomination.  Speculation is rampant about who her own Vice Presidential selection might be.  At this time, it appears that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has removed her name from those conversations and instead will help co-chair the Presidential campaign.  At last week’s Republican National Convention, that body affirmed that Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) will carry the Republican Party’s standard in November.  As a reminder, the MCUL and America’s Credit Unions do not engage in the Presidential contest politically.

The Primary Election is approaching quickly on Aug. 6. As per our normal practice during election cycles, a full list of endorsed state and federal candidates will continue to be included at the bottom of this update and will be updated onto our website. The next meeting of the Executive Committee of the Government and Political Affairs Forum where endorsements will be considered is July 29.

As always, thank you for all that you do for Michigan’s credit unions!

Sincerely,

Patty Corkery and the MCUL Advocacy Team
