How are Other Small Credit Unions Solving Today's Challenges?
A playbook built by Michigan credit unions, for Michigan credit unions
What if you had a practical playbook built specifically for the challenges your credit union faces every day?
That's exactly what the Michigan Credit Union League's Small Asset Size (SAS) Playbook initiative is creating. Designed for credit unions with $400 million in assets and below, the playbook brings together Michigan credit union leaders to share ideas, test strategies and build a resource grounded in real-world experience — not theory.
What participants are working on
During the latest virtual session, participants worked through the draft Marketing and Business Development chapter with industry expert Jeff Rendel. The conversation explored ways credit unions can evaluate their current marketing efforts, identify growth opportunities through SWOT analysis, understand emerging industry trends and prioritize initiatives that best support their strategic goals.
The discussion quickly moved beyond the framework as leaders shared what's working within their own organizations. Participants exchanged ideas on navigating resource constraints, increasing member engagement, tracking meaningful KPIs, encouraging digital wallet adoption and improving the digital member experience. Those conversations are already shaping the playbook, with new tools and practical resources being added based on participant feedback.
Ultimately, the SAS Playbook will include guidance across 10 to 11 operational areas that are critical to the success of smaller and mid-sized credit unions. Just as importantly, the initiative is creating a forum where peers can learn from one another and share solutions to common challenges.
It's not too late to join
If you've been thinking about participating, you're not behind. Each session is designed to stand on its own, so new participants are welcome at any point in the process. The League intentionally expanded eligibility to include credit unions with up to $400 million in assets so more organizations can contribute their perspectives and benefit from the finished resource.
Watch for announcements about upcoming fall sessions, including workshops on how to put the completed playbook into action and additional opportunities for peer-to-peer learning. Every new perspective makes the playbook stronger—and more valuable—for Michigan's small asset size credit unions.
