Northern Michigan Credit Unions Unite to Support Members Through Flood Relief Micro-Grant Fund
Nine credit unions serving Northern Michigan communities came together this spring to support members impacted by flooding through a collaborative micro-grant initiative. The Northern Michigan Flood Relief Fund was established and fully distributed to provide direct financial assistance to credit union members who experienced hardship as a result of the disaster.
The initiative was led by the Paul Bunyan Chapter of Credit Unions and included participation from 4Front Credit Union, Filer Credit Union, Forest Area Federal Credit Union, Frankfort Community Federal Credit Union, Northwest Consumers Federal Credit Union, Safe Harbor Credit Union, TBA Credit Union, Traverse Catholic Federal Credit Union and Wexford Community Credit Union. Together, the nine institutions serve thousands of members across the region.
Through combined contributions totaling $36,500, the fund supported the distribution of 73 micro-grants of $500 each. The grants helped members offset flood-related expenses including property damage, emergency needs, temporary displacement and income disruption.
“Credit unions were built on the principle of people helping people, and that principle has never been more important than it was during this time,” said David Powell, Mortgage Manager at TBA Credit Union. “The Northern Michigan Flood Relief Fund demonstrated what our region’s credit unions can accomplish when we work together. We wanted our members to know they were not alone in their recovery.”
Grant recipients were required to be current members of one of the participating credit unions, demonstrate financial impact related to the spring 2026 flooding and reside in an affected Northern Michigan community.
The Northern Michigan Flood Relief Fund served as a cooperative effort of the Michigan Credit Union League Paul Bunyan Chapter and its member credit unions, reinforcing their shared commitment to supporting members and communities during times of crisis.
