New Toolkit Helps Credit Unions Strengthen Efforts to Prevent Elder Financial Exploitation

Credit unions are increasingly called upon to help protect older adults as financial exploitation targeting this population continues to rise nationwide. Because they maintain trusted, long?term member relationships, credit unions are often well positioned to recognize warning signs and intervene early.

To support credit unions in that work, the League System has released a new Elder Exploitation Prevention Toolkit, a customizable resource designed to support staff, inform members and raise awareness in the broader community.

The toolkit is the second release in a planned series of five complimentary toolkits that will be provided to credit unions throughout 2026. Developed in partnership with the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), the resources are intended to be flexible and usable by credit unions of all asset sizes.

Designed for Education, Training, and Outreach

The Elder Exploitation Prevention Toolkit offers ready?to?use materials that can be integrated into day?to?day operations, internal training and external communications. All content is fully customizable, allowing credit unions to tailor messaging to their members and communities.

Materials included in the toolkit support multiple audiences and use cases, including:

While credit unions are encouraged to leverage the materials during June’s Elder Abuse Awareness Month, the toolkit can be used at any point throughout the year as part of ongoing education or outreach efforts.

A Broader League System Initiative

The launch of the Elder Exploitation Prevention Toolkit reflects the League System’s broader commitment to helping credit unions address emerging and urgent member needs. Through its partnership with AACUL, the League System is working to strengthen collective capacity across the credit union movement, beginning with initiatives focused on protecting older adults from financial harm.
