LMCU Awards $40,000 in Scholarships, Continuing Decades-Long Commitment to Education

Lake Michigan Credit Union has awarded a total of $40,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors in Michigan and Florida through its annual Lloyd F. Hutt Scholarship essay contest, reinforcing the organization’s long-standing commitment to education and community support.

Now in its 36th year, the program awards 20 scholarships of $2,000 each to graduating seniors pursuing higher education. The scholarship honors LMCU founder Lloyd F. Hutt, a former schoolteacher who dedicated his life to education and community involvement. More than 90 years after LMCU’s founding, that same focus on education continues through the Lloyd F. Hutt Scholarship and the credit union’s broader support of schools and students.

In addition to the scholarship program, LMCU supports education through teacher grants, in-school financial workshops, and initiatives that encourage and assist aspiring educators. Together, these efforts reflect the credit union’s belief that investing in education strengthens communities for the long term.

Interest in the 2025–26 scholarship contest remained strong, with 915 high school seniors submitting original essays. Students responded to the prompt:

“How do you stay authentic to yourself and your values in today’s fast-paced world, where so much takes place online?”

Applicants were required to submit essays between 750 and 1,500 words, which were reviewed anonymously by a panel of independent judges. Essays were evaluated based on passion for the topic, creativity, clarity, and originality.

Since 1990, the Lloyd F. Hutt Scholarship has provided more than $660,000 in scholarships to 372 high school seniors, helping students offset the cost of higher education while recognizing thoughtful leadership and personal values.

Matt Cook, LMCU Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility, emphasized the importance of the essay topic and the perspectives shared by this year’s applicants.

“Online authenticity is such an important issue that’s only getting more pressing by the day,” Cook said. “In this age of AI and social media misinformation, it’s reassuring to hear that so many of today’s students are still committed to ‘keeping it real.’ That’s why I want to thank our 20 winners, as well as everyone who submitted an essay: with soon-to-be leaders like you, our future’s in good hands.”

This year’s scholarship recipients represent schools and communities across Michigan and Florida, reflecting the wide reach of LMCU’s membership. While the awards recognize individual achievement, the broader impact extends to families, schools, and communities through increased access to educational opportunities.
