One Detroit Credit Union Celebrates New River Rouge Branch, Expanding Financial Access and Community Investment
One Detroit Credit Union celebrated its newly opened River Rouge branch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and Community Resource Fair, marking a significant investment in the community and the return of convenient, relationship-based financial services for residents and businesses.
Located inside River Rouge City Hall, the branch is now open as a full-service financial center serving individuals, families, entrepreneurs, businesses and community organizations. Its presence restores a vital community resource following the loss of local banking services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond providing everyday financial services, the branch serves as a community partner focused on financial education, homeownership, entrepreneurship and long-term financial stability. The presence of a trusted financial institution also supports River Rouge’s economic development efforts by creating greater access to capital and helping position the city to attract new businesses and additional investment.
“This is more than a ribbon cutting. It represents a true partnership in restoring financial services to our community and moving River Rouge forward,” said River Rouge Mayor William Campbell. “Having a financial institution committed to being present and investing in our residents is an important part of the continued growth of our city.”
The River Rouge branch provides direct access to financial professionals who understand the community and can connect members with banking products, lending solutions and personalized guidance. For entrepreneurs and small businesses, the branch offers a neighborhood-based connection to resources that can support business development, expansion and job creation.
One Detroit Credit Union President and CEO Portia Powell emphasized that the expansion reflects the credit union’s broader commitment to increasing financial access and investing in communities throughout the Detroit region.
“One Detroit Credit Union is committed to serving the entire Detroit region, and we are proud to extend our commitment to impacting and changing lives to the River Rouge community,” said Powell. “This branch is about more than opening our doors. It is about becoming a partner to this community, building relationships and ensuring residents have access to the financial tools, resources and support they need to thrive.”
The grand opening celebration extended beyond the ribbon cutting with a Community Resource Fair sponsored by the Michigan Credit Union Foundation. Designed to connect residents with practical tools and trusted community partners, the fair offered resources related to financial education, housing, homeownership, entrepreneurship and family financial security.
Participating organizations included GreenPath Financial Wellness, Mortgage Center, ProsperUs Detroit and Family Security Plan.
“At MCUF, we’re committed to supporting credit unions as they turn meaningful community impact ideas into action,” said Andrea Tucker, Executive Director of the Michigan Credit Union Foundation. “One Detroit Credit Union’s investment in River Rouge is a great example of that, bringing accessible financial services back into the community while connecting residents with resources, education and support that can strengthen their financial well-being.”
The celebration also featured live entertainment from DJBJ, along with food, games and activities for residents and families. A special guest appearance by Nitro of the Motor City Cruise added to the excitement and helped make the event a welcoming community celebration for attendees of all ages.
The River Rouge branch represents a broader investment in the city’s future. By expanding access to capital, financial education and personalized support, One Detroit Credit Union is helping residents build savings, establish credit, pursue homeownership, grow businesses and create stronger financial futures.
The branch also demonstrates how financial institutions, local government and community organizations can work together to strengthen neighborhoods, expand opportunity and encourage sustained economic investment.
