LAFCU Awards $10K to Essay Contest Winners Supporting Debt Reduction

pathLAFCU awarded $10,000 in grants to four individuals through its 2025 Pathway to Financial Transformation Essay Contest. The credit union presented the awards during a July 17 check ceremony at its Lansing headquarters.

The annual contest encourages Michiganders to reflect on their financial habits, create plans to reduce debt and outline strategies for long-term stability. Open to both members and non-members, the contest welcomed applicants from across Michigan. Four winners each received a $2,500 grant based on a one-page essay explaining how the funds would support their financial goals.

“Financial transformation isn’t just about paying down debt — it’s about gaining the knowledge, confidence and discipline to make lasting change,” said Shelia Scott, LAFCU community financial education and business development officer. “Through this contest, we’re helping people turn reflection into action and create a roadmap for a healthier financial future.”

This year’s winners include Alisha Alexander of East Lansing, Anthony Dugarte of Fenton, DaVasha Lobbins of Lansing and a fourth recipient who chose to remain anonymous. Their essays shared personal stories of perseverance — from a single mother focused on paying down debt and building a better future, to another working toward homeownership and financial education for her child, to a medical professional navigating the financial strain of advanced training.

“Winning this grant has given me a real sense of hope and a chance to reset,” said DaVasha Lobbins. “I feel motivated and no longer stuck — like I finally have the opportunity to move forward from my previous situation. I’m truly grateful to LAFCU for making this possible.”

The Pathway to Financial Transformation Essay Contest will return in spring 2026. In addition to the grant opportunity, LAFCU offers Pathway to Financial Transformation, an eight-month personal finance course that equips participants with tools to take control of their financial future. Enrollment for the next program cohort opens in August. More information is available at lafcu.com/pathway.
