Gerber Federal Credit Union Awards $4,500 in Annual Essay Scholarships

Gerber Federal Credit Union awarded a total of $4,500 to local students through its Annual Essay Scholarship Program, recognizing strong writing skills and thoughtful perspectives on financial education.

This year’s scholarship invited students to respond to the question, “How should schools better prepare students for real-world financial responsibilities?” Gerber FCU members in their senior year of high school were eligible to enter by submitting a 300–500 word essay. Students planning to attend an accredited technical school, community college, trade school, four-year college or university, or an apprentice program were encouraged to participate.

Essays were submitted by both email and mail and reviewed anonymously to ensure a fair selection process. Judges evaluated each entry based on topical relevance and quality of writing after all identifying information had been removed.

Three students from Fremont High School were selected as this year’s scholarship recipients.

Anna Norris earned First Place and was awarded $2,000, along with publication of her essay on GerberFCU.com. Ashton Dronchi received Second Place and was awarded $1,500, while Brynna Barnhart earned Third Place and was awarded $1,000.

Essays were reviewed by a panel of judges that included two educators from various school districts in Newaygo County as well as a County of Newaygo retiree. The diverse panel brought a range of experience to the evaluation process.

Through its Annual Essay Scholarship Program, Gerber FCU continues to encourage meaningful conversations about financial responsibility while supporting students as they prepare for their next steps beyond high school.
