Breakwater FCU Reaches Over 500 Copper Country Residents Through Financial Literacy Month
Breakwater Federal Credit Union brought hands-on financial education to over 500 Copper Country residents through a wide variety of events and initiatives during April’s National Financial Literacy Month.
This year, Breakwater focused on developing financial literacy programming designed for all ages, reaching community members where they are. From tots to teens, and even adults, this year’s initiatives created meaningful opportunities for individuals and families across the Copper Country to build financial confidence through hands-on learning experiences.
The month featured a range of educational opportunities, including two Financial Reality Fairs for students from Houghton, L’Anse, and Baraga High Schools, the Bright Futures Fair in partnership with Michigan Tech’s GEAR UP and TRIO Pre-College Access Programs, youth story times and hands-on activities at the Portage Lake District Library, and Breakwater’s first-ever Money on Tap: Bingo by the Buoyard event for adults at Small Craft in Hancock.
Additionally, Breakwater attended the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College Career Fair & Job Expo to highlight career opportunities within the financial industry, hosted a month-long Financial Literacy Bingo challenge for adults, and awarded three $1,500 scholarships to local high school students who reflected on their financial goals through an essay component.
“Financial literacy is about giving people the confidence and knowledge to make informed decisions throughout every stage of life,” said Paula J. Megowen, President/CEO of Breakwater Federal Credit Union. “We are proud to continue creating opportunities that make financial education engaging, accessible, and meaningful for our entire community.”
Throughout Financial Literacy Month, Breakwater directly engaged with 365 individuals through classroom visits, community events, and hands-on learning experiences, while indirectly reaching an estimated 169 additional parents, volunteers, observers, and community members who participated in or experienced these initiatives alongside attendees. From early childhood story times to high school simulations, career exploration, and adult-focused financial education events, Breakwater’s month-long efforts reflect its ongoing commitment to empowering the Copper Country community through accessible and engaging financial literacy programming.
