American 1 Credit Union Partners with Michigan Department of Corrections to Provide Financial Education at Parnall Correctional Facility
American 1 Credit Union has partnered with the Michigan Department of Corrections at Parnall Correctional Facility to provide financial wellness education to incarcerated individuals preparing for reentry into society. As part of the facility’s Vocational Village program, American 1’s Financial Wellness team is teaching essential financial skills to future parolees to help them prepare for long-term success.
The classes, led by the Financial Wellness team, cover topics including budgeting, understanding credit reports and building credit. The lessons aim to equip participants with the tools needed to navigate the modern financial landscape and make informed decisions after release.
“The financial landscape has changed significantly since many of these individuals entered the system,” said Collin Martin, Financial Wellness Manager. “Our goal is to empower them with the knowledge and confidence to manage their finances and avoid the struggles that often accompany reentry.”
The Vocational Village program provides career training and life skills to incarcerated individuals. The addition of financial education through American 1 supports the program’s comprehensive approach to rehabilitation.
“At American 1, our mission is to create financial wellness across all communities we serve,” said Carolyn Duncan, Chief Member Experience Officer. “This partnership represents a meaningful step toward that goal—equipping incarcerated individuals with the financial knowledge and tools they need to successfully transition into life after release.”
American 1 offers financial coaching and classes to members and the community. The credit union also provides the Fresh Start program, which offers credit-building options for those with low or no credit history. More information is available at american1cu.org/GetAFreshStart.
