Credit Unions, Coffee and Conversation: Tru Treasury’s John Ballantyne on Business Services and the Power of Partnership

The latest episode of MCUL’s podcast series, Credit Unions, Coffee and Conversation, features a conversation with John Ballantyne, Founder and CEO of Tru Treasury.

Hosted by MCUL CEO Patty Corkery, the episode explores the growing role credit unions play in serving the business community—and how Tru Treasury is helping them do it. Ballantyne, who helped launch the CUSO in 2021, shares Tru Treasury’s mission to bring clarity, efficiency, and strategy to treasury management for credit unions of all sizes.

Ballantyne brings more than 16 years of experience in financial services to the table, including leadership roles in underwriting, payments, and treasury management. Prior to founding Tru Treasury, he held several executive positions at SunTrust Bank (now Truist), including Head of Treasury Solutions Proposal Management and VP of Digital Money Movement. He’s also a military veteran, startup founder, and currently serves as a Field Grade Officer in the Army Reserves.

Under his leadership, Tru Treasury was recently named CUSO of the Year, a recognition of its work in helping credit unions deliver competitive solutions to business members while maintaining their cooperative edge.

In the episode, Ballantyne discusses what sets Tru Treasury apart, how his team collaborates with credit union partners, and why education is key to unlocking long-term business member growth.

“Treasury doesn’t have to be complicated,” says Ballantyne. “It’s about helping credit unions deliver more value, in ways that truly serve their communities.”
