Around the Lake in Eight Days Raises $18,000+ for MCUF!

The Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) wrapped up its recent fundraiser with an inspiring achievement: “Around the Lake in Eight Days.”

Dr. Lamont Black of Wide Open Ventures pedaled solo around Lake Michigan in just eight days, covering more than 1,000 miles. Along the way, he made stops at several credit unions on his route, connecting directly with staff, who rallied behind his efforts and the MCUF mission. His incredible journey not only turned heads but also spotlighted the work of Michigan credit unions.

Thanks to the generosity of credit unions, businesses and individuals across the state, the effort raised more than $23,000 to MCUF’s mission. These funds will fuel programs that improve financial well-being for people, families, businesses, and communities across Michigan.

The success of the fundraiser was amplified by matching donations from Lake Michigan Credit Union, Honor Credit Union and Team One Credit Union. Additional contributions came from many credit unions across the state, including Genisys CU, Michigan State University FCU, PFCU, Marshall Community CU, Peninsula FCU, Monroe Community CU, Consumers CU, Soo Co-op CU, Members First CU, Isabella Community CU and the statewide young professionals’ group, FUELmi. As well as a generous donation of $5,000 from Michigan Business Connection.

“This fundraiser was an incredible demonstration of endurance, generosity, and community spirt,” said Andrea Tucker, MCUF Executive Director. “The funds raised will go directly toward helping Michigan credit unions create meaningful impact for members and communities across our state.”

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Lamont Black shared, “Riding around Lake Michigan in eight days was an incredible personal challenge. But it was also an opportunity to bring attention to the important work of credit unions. I’m honored to have partnered with MCUF to support financial well-being and to know that every mile contributed to making a difference in people’s lives.”

This one-of-a-kind ride was more than an endurance challenge – it was a reminder of how collective effort and community support can drive meaningful change. MCUF extends its gratitude to Dr. Lamont Black and to all credit unions, businesses, and individuals who contributed to making this event a success.
