Patty Corkery in Detroit News: Attacking Interchange Puts Michigan Families at Risk
MCUL President/CEO Patty Corkery was featured in The Detroit News with an opinion piece pushing back against efforts to weaken or eliminate interchange.
In her op-ed, Corkery explains that interchange isn’t a “hidden tax” or corporate profit grab, but the small portion of every transaction that funds the systems making card payments safe, seamless and widely accepted. These fees cover fraud protection, data security and the infrastructure that ensures Michigan families and small businesses can rely on their cards every day, whether at the gas pump, the grocery store or online.
The bottom line: Michigan needs policies that protect consumers, support small businesses and strengthen local financial institutions. Cutting interchange would do the opposite, shifting costs onto families and putting secure transactions at risk.
