Michigan Coastal Credit Union Launces Financial Education and Leadership Development Series
With the help of a Michigan Credit Union Foundation Community Enrichment Grant, Michigan Coastal Credit Union CEO Rob Viland launched a new monthly workshop series in partnership with the Upper Room Church in Muskegon County.
The congregation of the church is primarily younger, in the 25–40 age range and located in a lower-income area of the state.
The first two sessions attracted 38 attendees each and focused on budgeting, emergency savings, credit scores and payday lending alternatives. Viland reports that 18 of the attendees are planning on joining the credit union and are requesting individual appointments; they have already helped one attendee become a member and save $150 per month with a debt consolidation loan.
The goals of the series include improving attendees credit scores and eliminating the needs for payday lending. Future sessions will also include leadership development topics to help increase the potential of employment and career advancement.Go to main navigation
