Credit Unions Meet with Congressman Justin Amash On Key Legislative Issues

Congressman Amash and Credit Union ProfessionalsOn May 30, credit union leaders from Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District had the pleasure of meeting with Representative Justin Amash (R-3) at Lake Michigan Credit Union’s headquarters in Grand Rapids.

Congressman Amash sits on the U.S. House of Representatives’ Oversight and Government Reform Committee and is a member of the House Liberty Caucus, as well as the House Freedom Caucus. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 2010 and has been re-elected, with solid majorities, every two years since.

During the May 30 meeting, the congressman offered a legislative update focused on the current leadership in the House and the legislative process.

Credit union executives used the opportunity to thank Congressman Amash for his continued support of the credit union not-for-profit tax status, including providing MCUL with a strong statement of support in 2017 and voting in favor of S. 2155, which was recently signed into law.  The group also had time to discuss internet privacy in general and the data security concerns of credit unions specifically, including the potential for national legislation to help financial institutions deal with data breaches.
