U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow Meets with Credit Unions in East Lansing

On Jan. 12, several credit union leaders met with Senator Debbie Stabenow at Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) in East Lansing to discuss the Michigan Credit Union League’s (MCUL) 2018 federal legislative priorities. The conversation centered around recently enacted tax relief bill H.R. 1 and the need for targeted regulatory reform for credit unions and other community-based lenders.

expressed their appreciation for the Senator’s strong support of maintaining the not-for-profit tax status of credit unions. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee and a leader within the Democratic caucus, Senator Stabenow, along with other Republican and Democratic credit union supporters in Congress, prevented an effort by those seeking to change the credit tax status from gaining traction during the debate on H.R. 1.

Credit union leaders also took the time to share examples of the increasing burden regulations place on credit unions. MCUL stated its support for S. 2155, the Senate Banking Committee’s regulatory relief bill, and the group was pleased to hear Senator Stabenow express her support of the legislation.

MCUL will continue to engage members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation on issues important to credit unions. Please email manager of federal legislative affairs Todd Jorns or call (734) 793-3445 with any questions on federal legislative issues.
