Michigan Credit Unions are Leaders in Youth Financial Education Again
Michigan once again was a top state for youth financial education sessions during the last school year. According to the National Youth Involvement Board’s (NYIB) annual report, Michigan credit unions logged 3,006 presentations from July 1 of last year to June 30 of this year, reaching 73,879 students. The report also recognizes fifteen Michigan credit union financial educators as top presenters across all asset size categories including MSUFCU’s Paul Day with the second highest personal impact in the nation with 451 presentations reaching 11,507 students.
Reporting numbers increased this year in Michigan by 34 percent and have increased nationwide to show the credit union impact in financial education. This year, a total of 45 states reported 17,537 presentations reaching 580,460 students. In Michigan, the success of the financial reality fairs supported by the Michigan Credit Union Foundation contributed to these numbers and helped more than 2,500 high school students prepare for successful financial independence.
Beth Troost, executive director for Michigan Credit Union Foundation, suspects the real numbers in Michigan are even larger as it is likely that more credit unions conduct youth financial education presentations, but they haven’t reported to the NYIB. Any credit union making financial education presentations to youth up to the age of 22 are encouraged to report that activity to the NYIB to help quantify the credit union difference in financial education. The NYIB released the report at their annual meeting during the recent annual conference. In addition to these great reporting numbers, Michigan’s own Elizabeth Sarenius of Honor Credit Union won the 2017 North Central Region scholarship to attend the conference this year. Jeremy Cybulski of Community Financial Credit Union, the current NYIB North Central Regional Coordinator, was re-elected as the Vice Chair of the NYIB Executive Committee.Go to main navigation
