Credit Unions Sponsor the 2017 High School Personal Finance Challenge

Funding from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation for the Michigan Council on Economic Education’s 2017 Personal Finance Challenge provides an opportunity for high school students to learn and demonstrate their knowledge of personal finance by competing with other students across the state. Credit unions are encouraged to alert local high schools to this free opportunity.

Every Michigan teacher can register to have their students participate in the online qualifying round of the Personal Finance Challenge. Students participate in teams at their schools in an online qualifying round and 80 students from the top teams from regions all across Michigan will be invited participate in a three-round State Finals competition at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago-Detroit Branch on April 24. A credit union facilitated Financial Reality Fair at the state finals will enhance the student experience.

The winning team at the state finals will win college scholarships and will travel to the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Missouri on May 5 to represent Michigan in the National Personal Finance Challenge to win more cash and prizes!

Michigan is divided into eight regions and the top team in the online qualifying round from each region is guaranteed to have a representative at the state finals. Additionally, 12 at-large bids will be given out to the next highest scoring teams and schools.

High school teachers register to participate on the Personal Finance Challenge webpage. The online competition starts March 20. A $20 Amazon gift card to the first 50 teachers who register and have at least 30 students take the online qualification test. When registering, teachers have the option of requesting a credit union financial education specialist to visit classes and help them prepare for the competition.

This is the second year that the Michigan Council on Economic Education has facilitated the Personal Finance Challenge. The inaugural event last year had more than 700 students participating in the online competition and 80 students in the state finals at the Federal Reserve Bank in Detroit. Lake Orion High School took home the championship after an exciting day of competition, and represented Michigan at the national championship in Kansas City last May.
