MSGCU Awards Scholarships to 65 Michigan Residents

Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to 65 Michigan residents through its 2026 scholarship program.

Recipients include 39 students and four educators who each received $2,500 awards as well as 22 individuals pursuing careers as first responders who received $2,000 scholarships. MSGCU reviewed hundreds of applications for this year’s program.

Established more than 20 years ago, the scholarship program has expanded to include support for students pursuing higher education as well as individuals entering skilled trades, education and first responder careers. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $1.5 million.

“Scholarships help our recipients advance their education and achieve their goal of earning a degree or certification,” said Steve Brewer, MSGCU President/CEO. “We’re proud to recognize the hard work of our honorees and help them build a strong financial future through these awards.”

Recipients are selected based on academic achievement, community service and demonstrated commitment to their future goals, with criteria tailored to each scholarship’s focus.

The William Cayen Skilled Trades Scholarship, established in 2019, supports students pursuing careers in fields such as carpentry, electrical, construction, HVAC and machining. Two recipients were selected for this award.

The Rudolph Heino People Helping People Scholarship recognizes high school seniors who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service. Fifteen students were selected for this award, including one recipient designated “In Memory of Taylor Jade DeRosa.”

The Larry Swantek Educational Studies Scholarship supports students pursuing careers in education, with four recipients selected for 2026.

The Milo Perreault Educator Advancement Scholarship provides support for current educators and administrators seeking continuing education, with four recipients receiving awards this year.

The MSGCU High School Excellence Scholarship supports high school seniors planning to attend two- or four-year colleges or universities. Eighteen students were selected for this award.

MSGCU also offers the Stephen Thomas First Responder Scholarship, which provides funding for individuals enrolled in police, fire and paramedic programs. In 2026, the credit union is awarding 22 scholarships totaling $44,000, including expanded support for paramedic students.
