Genisys Credit Union Supports Community Garden Initiative with Dutton Farm

genGenisys Credit Union is continuing its partnership with Dutton Farm to support a community garden initiative at Nelson Park in Sterling Heights, providing opportunities for adults with disabilities to engage in hands-on learning and community involvement.

First launched in 2025, the collaboration centers on maintaining garden beds at the Sterling Heights Community Garden. Participants from Dutton Farm, a nonprofit organization serving adults with disabilities, help plant, maintain and harvest produce throughout the growing season.

In its first year, the group maintained two in-ground beds that produced tomatoes, basil and green bell peppers among other items. Participants tended the gardens weekly, with harvested produce both donated to families in need and sold at the organization’s farm market.

“Dutton Farm is proud to partner with Genisys Credit Union for the Community Gardens in Sterling Heights—a space where our participants in our Macomb location can grow fresh vegetables, learn new skills, and cultivate community,” said Kim Staudacher, Director of Development, Dutton Farm. “This partnership not only enriches our programming, but also empowers individuals of all abilities to connect with nature and contribute meaningfully.”

In 2026, Genisys is funding three garden beds, including a raised bed designed to improve accessibility for participants. The expansion reflects a continued focus on inclusion and community engagement.

“Our partnership with Dutton Farm is a commitment to creating a community where everyone feels a true sense of belonging,” said Jackie Buchanan, President and CEO of Genisys Credit Union. “The Community Garden is a story of what we can achieve when we join together and cultivate purpose, demonstrating the strength to serve takes the support of many.”

The Sterling Heights Community Garden at Nelson Park opened in spring 2025 and includes more than 115 garden beds as well as a children’s garden, native plant areas, a bee apiary, a butterfly conservatory, a microforest and public art.
