Michigan Credit Unions Shine During National Financial Literacy Month

LANSING, April 12, 2013 - While active in financial literacy all year-round, the Michigan Credit Union League & Affiliates and member credit unions have unveiled a roster of activities in local communities across the state geared toward celebrating National Financial Literacy Month in April.

That includes a unique partnership between local credit unions, schools and lawmakers called the Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge, Money Smart Week workshops, free tools for educators, and a whole host of programs designed to give families, small businesses and individuals resources and information to strengthen their finances.

“In today’s challenging economic landscape, financial education and awareness have never been more important,” said MCUL & Affiliates CEO David Adams. “People of all ages need good information to make good decisions that affect their futures. Michigan credit unions are stepping up to meet this demand and we’re proud to work with local partners, educators, businesses and community leaders to promote financial literacy in April and year-round.”

The Michigan House of Representatives also passed a bipartisan resolution honoring April as Youth Financial Literacy Month. This comes as 35 legislators have been matched with local credit unions to participate in the 10th annual Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge, holding joint financial education events with local credit unions in schools and communities April, with still more matches to come.

Michigan’s credit unions are national leaders in youth financial education, reaching nearly 47,000 students during the 2011-2012 school year and organizing more than 375 student-run credit unions across the state – the most in the country.

In recognition of National Financial Literacy Month, MCUL gave every state legislator a DVD of an episode of the award winning Biz Kid$ show along with a printed lesson plan that can be utilized by a classroom or youth group. A public TV series, Biz Kid$ teaches children about money management and entrepreneurship and received a Parent’s Choice Gold Award on April 5.
