Participants were all given a free 2018 Newaygo County Cancer Walk t-shirt made possible by generous local sponsors including Gerber Federal Credit Union. Before more 60 walkers began their two-mile trek through town, Sue Splitstone of Gerber Federal Credit Union shared her cancer survival story.
“The first Relay for Life that I can remember that really impacted my life and my husband’s was in June 2007, watching my mom and older sister walking the survivor’s lap,” said Splitstone during her speech. “I remember saying to my husband ‘that could be me someday.’ That following June [there I was] doing the survivor lap along with my mom and sister. Let’s now walk together and celebrate, honor and remember those who have been touched by cancer.”
