Community Choice CU Prepares to Celebrate Give Big Month
To raise awareness for volunteerism with credit union members and the general public, more than 300 Community Choice Credit Union team members will lead by example and be volunteers in multiple communities on a daily basis across the state of Michigan during its second annual Give Big Month.
Community Choice, its board of directors and its team members will be celebrating their 10th anniversary of volunteering throughout the state all month long. In 2008, the credit union formalized its initiatives to serve the community by hosting its first annual Give Big weekend. As the credit union continues to grow in membership, locations and team members, the event has expanded from one weekend to the entire month of September.
Throughout the month, team members at Community Choice will select from a range of charitable activities that take place each day. Whether it’s helping a senior citizen with their grocery shopping, participating in fundraising events or serving dinner to homeless veterans, team members will be busy helping those in need.
“We feel September is the perfect time to focus on volunteering in the community,” said Molly Salvi, organizational communications manager at Community Choice. “It’s before the start of the holiday season where food banks and shelters are really ramping up for holiday donations and the cold weather, but it’s still warm enough to help with landscaping clean-ups for those who may be unable to do the work themselves.”
Some of this year’s volunteer opportunities include staffing the Gleaners Mobile Grocery truck, cleaning up community gardens in Eastpointe, working at Forgotten Harvest Farm, raising money through fun runs, packing food baskets for kids and helping out at Play Place for Autism.
Salvi also explained the significance of giving to the organization, stating they are proud to uphold the credit union belief of “people helping people.”
“Giving back to others is a shared belief among team members throughout our organization; we attract great talent based on our desire to give back, and Give Big,” said Donna B. Siejutt, chief human resources and marketing officer for the credit union.
Since 2008, Community Choice team members, their families and friends have given more than 21,000 hours of their time to communities across the state. Last year alone, team members volunteered a total of 2,454 hours during the credit union’s first Give Big Month; an accomplishment they hope to surpass this year.
In 2018, volunteer activities continue to support Community Choice’s four areas of giving which include health and human services, community beautification, capacity building and basic human needs. In response to the positive member support they’ve experienced over the years, this is the first year where the credit union will urge members and the general public to participate in multiple fun runs and walks around the community.
