MCUF Award Winners Build Community and Advance the Credit Union Spirit

The Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) presents two annual awards — the Award for Excellence in Consumer Education and the Credit Union Community Volunteer Award — which recognize leadership in financial education and community outreach. It is MCUF’s pleasure to reward these honors to a credit union and an individual who both exemplify the credit union spirit of supporting community and “people helping people.”

In 2018, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) received the Award for Excellence in Consumer Education, and Bill Brewer of CASE Credit Union received the Credit Union Community Volunteer Award.

Award for Excellence in Consumer Education: MSUFCU

Last year, MSUFCU’s financial education department helped educate more than 13,715 individuals through presentations and trainings that targeted budgeting, identity theft awareness, credit reports, credit cards, fraud, and more. These were supplemented by products such as the credit union’s Financial 4.0 website and app, which offer users financial education articles, weekly tips, calculators, a budget tracker and quizzes.

MSUFCU believes personal success is intertwined with financial security: If you achieve financial stability, you are better equipped to achieve your dreams. This philosophy guides the credit union’s work, whether it is interactions between employees and members or additional resources like these presentations. MSUFCU exemplifies financial education advocacy in all conversations, business objectives and involvement initiatives.

Credit Union Community Volunteer Award: Bill Brewer

As a member and current chairperson of the CASE Credit Union board of directors, Brewer has come to understand the importance of serving his community and advancing the credit union vision. Brewer works tirelessly to support CASE and the industry as a whole by advocating for state and national grassroots efforts, and contributing to political action committees that champion the credit union cause. He understands the principle of putting people first, which lies at the heart of the credit union mission.

In addition to his work with CASE, Brewer devotes time to other Lansing organizations, such as the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission, the Workforce Development Board for Capital Area Michigan Works!, the Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities, and more. His work in the Lansing community demonstrates how the credit union impact can extend far beyond financial wellness.

Both MSUFCU and Brewer are excellent examples of how community building and credit unions go hand in hand. Whether it is through top-notch financial education, board leadership or diverse community engagement, MSUFCU and Brewer lead the way in keeping “people helping people” top of mind.

MSUFCU and Brewer will be formally awarded at the Honors Awards Breakfast during the MCUL/CUSG 2018 Annual Convention & Exposition in Traverse City, June 6–9.
