Michigan House Resolution 0309 Declares Money Smart Week April 21-28

On April 19, Michigan House Resolution 0309, sponsored by Representative Diana Farrington, was adopted to declare April 21–28 as Money Smart Week in the State of Michigan. The Michigan Credit Union League’s government affairs team worked with Rep. Farrington to assist with this effort.

Michigan credit unions are very involved in Money Smart Week activities. Many credit unions are holding their own financial education events, which are listed in the online event calendar.

In addition, statewide initiatives sponsored by Michigan credit unions through the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) are helping thousands of families be more money smart.

Money Smart Kids Read is one of them, a program where 8,000 families will take home the book Lots and Lots of Coins during preschool storytimes at more than 200 public libraries throughout the state during Money Smart Week.

There’s also the High School Personal Finance Challenge State Playoff, which takes place on April 23 at the Detroit Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. This challenge has provided an opportunity to all high school students in the state sponsored by Michigan credit unions through MCUF.

More than 800 students throughout the state took the online qualifying test, many with credit union assistance with financial education in preparation. The top 21 teams will participate in the state finals, where the students will also have the opportunity to apply their personal finance knowledge in a Financial Reality Fair facilitated by 42 credit union volunteers from 11 credit unions.
