Michigan Credit Union League Oakland Chapter Lends a Helping Hand to Local Charities
The Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) Oakland Chapter held its annual charity golf outing on June 20 at the Links of Novi in Novi, Michigan where 136 golfers chipped away at raising funds for a trio of nonprofits that help countless individuals throughout Southeast Michigan every year: Forgotten Harvest, Common Ground and FernCare Free Clinic. The event raised over $12,000, $1,000 more than last year. The funds will be divided among the three charities with each one receiving more than $4,000.
“I’m extremely proud of the efforts of the Oakland Chapter of Credit Unions Golf Committee and sincerely thank all of the golfers and sponsors for supporting us in our mission to help these important charities in our county,” said Dan Davidson, Chief Financial Officer of Alliance Catholic Credit Union and vice chairman for Oakland Chapter of Credit Unions.
One benefactor of the proceeds, Forgotten Harvest, is renowned as a leader in Metro Detroit for mitigating hunger and preventing nutritious food waste. The nonprofit has been serving this crucial role in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties since 1990.
A second benefactor, Common Ground, provides a lifeline for individuals and families in crisis, victims of crime, persons with mental illness, people trying to cope with critical situations and runaway and homeless youths. The agency routinely serves more than 80,000 individuals per year.
“Common Ground is incredibly grateful for the support received from the Oakland Chapter of Credit Unions,” said Jeffrey Kapuscinski, Business Development Director for Common Ground. “The funds raised will directly impact our mission and essential work of helping people move from crisis to hope.”
Kapuscinski added that the monetary contributions will specifically be earmarked to support victim support groups as well as Common Ground’s homeless and youth runaway shelter.
The last benefactor, FernCare Free Clinic, is a non-profit, free clinic that provides no-cost medical care to the medically uninsured and underinsured residents of Ferndale and its surrounding communities.
There are currently 25 credit unions represented in the MCUL Oakland Chapter. This chapter routinely lobbies for legislative action, provides scholarship and grant opportunities for credit union professionals and their family members, and holds fundraisers for various nonprofits.
