COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT Midland Flood Relief Funds Raised — $161,760
SUPPORT AND GRANTS
On May 19, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency in Midland
and Gladwin Counties following catastrophic flooding as a cause of dam
breakages. The two dam breaks, which happened after heavy rain, caused
approximately 10,000 people in the area to immediately evacuate their homes.
In response, MCUF helped the Mid-Michigan Chapter of Credit Unions
quickly mobilize a cooperative member grant program. In addition to
support from MCUL and MCUF, donations from credit unions, businesses
and individuals totaled $161,760, providing grants for critical home repairs
for 325 members of 17 area credit unions.
In addition, MCUF facilitated grants in partnership with NCUF’s CUAid fund
totaling $29,700 to help 25 credit union employees in need of flood-related
home repairs.
“It was amazing to see the credit unions in the Mid-Michigan Chapter
organize this relief fund, and to see the funds that were given not only by
MCUF but organizations across the state. To see how the leaders of credit
unions of this region jumped into action right away was very heartening,”
said DCECU CEO Michael Goad.
