International Credit Union Day 2022
International Credit Union Day (ICU Day) exists to raise awareness and celebrate what makes credit unions unique. This year’s theme looks toward empowering your members and community to build a better financial future with your credit union.
Each year since 1948, ICU Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October. This year, that lands on Oct. 20. The idea is to raise awareness about what it means for members around the world to have a credit union as their financial partner — the benefits of our industry’s cooperative structure and social mission.
In Michigan, the benefits, according to CUNA’s Member Benefits Report for Q2 2021, look like this: Michigan credit unions contributed to a total of $499.9 million in direct financial benefits to Michigan’s 5.87 million members over the previous twelve months. This total is equal to $85 per member or $179 per household. These are calculated based on average savings differences between credit union and bank pricing. They result from financial benefits, such as higher CD rates and fee-free checking, as well as lower rates and fees on products like home, car and auto loans.
In the carousel above, you can see many other ways the Michigan credit union movement makes this state a better place to live for everyone.

We encourage credit unions around the globe to share social media stories of member empowerment on ICU Day. World Council shared one such example on episode 16 of The Global Credit Union Podcast. You can hear that here.
