Dr. Stephen Happel is a Professor of Economics at the Arizona State University College of Business. He grew up in Quincy, Illinois, received a B.A. (1969) in mathematics and economics from the University of Missouri and an M.A. (1972) and Ph.D. (1976) in economics from Duke University. In addition to visiting appointments at North Carolina State University, the Australian National University and the University of Waikato in New Zealand, he served as Associate Dean and founding director of the Honors Program in the ASU College of Business.

Dr. Happel’s research focuses on microeconomic issues and demographics. He has written two textbooks along with numerous articles in professional journals and popular outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Christian Science Monitor. His work includes arguments for free-market ticket scalping and defense of tenure as necessary for free-speech universities.

Dr. Happel loves the classroom, and his teaching awards include the Arizona Professor of the Year. He has both large freshman classes in macroeconomics and MBA classes in managerial economics, and he is also a long-time instructor at Pacific Coast Banking School. Dr. Happel speaks frequently throughout the west about current state of the economy, paying particular attention to Federal reserve policy and generational impacts.
