Responding to Hurricane Disaster Victims
The Michigan credit union community has collectively donated nearly $600,000 to benefit the victims of 2005’s devastating hurricanes. The Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) has been tracking credit union fund-raising activities since early September 2005, when the industry-wide effort to assist hurricane victims began.

The aggregate tally includes individual credit union donations to relief organizations that total some $420,000, as well as more than $161,000 in contributions to the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) Hurricane Relief Fund, created in cooperation with the MCUL.

The Fund was established to route monetary donations to both the American Red Cross for humanitarian relief efforts and the National Credit Union Foundation for credit union rebuilding and rehabilitation.

From the Fund, the MCUF has committed and/or disbursed:

  • $76,021 to the American Red Cross
  • $85,974 to the National Credit Union Foundation

Individual Efforts

Credit unions raised an additional $420,000 and distributed those funds to a number of charitable organizations including the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, and other relief organizations.

Top Fund-raisers and Notable Activities

  • Members and employees of State Employees Credit Union (SECU) made contributions to the SECU Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund totaling $20,304, which SECU matched, for a combined total of $40,608. Funds collected were divided between two programs: the American Red Cross and the National Credit Union Foundation. SECU also contributed an additional $80,000 to the NCUF.

While some credit unions made corporate and matching donations, other credit unions donated clothing and other disaster relief provisions, held blood drives and worked with local church and government organizations to help displaced victims find housing in Michigan.

Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union, Battle Creek, lent their mobile credit union branch and ATM to Gulf Coast Community Federal Credit Union (GCCFU) in Gulfport, Mississippi. GCCFU, a $48 million asset credit union serving more than 10,000 members, was severely affected by the disaster when two of its three branches were completely destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.

Credit union chapters across Michigan donated more than $15,000 to the relief effort.
