Materials Preparation
1. Order enough tubes so that each student receives three tubes. Print one label per student, per tube. One label should read SAVE; one label should read SHARE; and one label should read SPEND. (It’s recommended you color code them: save=red, share=yellow and green=spend. You could also place a label with your credit union’s name and logo on each tube).
2. Familiarize yourself with the “Quarter, Nickel, Dime and Penny” poem. Create coin visuals (quarter, nickel, dime, penny) with corresponding poem stanza. (Refer to the example included in this kit.)
3. Create quarter, nickel, dime and penny flashcards. Place the chicken graphic on a flashcard as well. (Coin and chicken graphics included in this kit.)
4. Create red green and yellow flashcards.
5. Create save, share and spend money visuals. (See example provided in this kit.)
6. Create handout with the “Quarter, Nickel, Dime and Penny” poem and any other information you wish to add.
Presentation Details
- Introduce yourself.
- Read the “Quarter, Nickel, Dime and Penny” poem to the kids. While reading the poem, it’s helpful to show a coin visual for each stanza.
- Read through the poem a second time and have the kids say the amounts with you.
- Review coin recognition by holding up your penny, nickel, dime and quarter flashcards. Let the kids first try and guess what the coin is along with the amount, and then explain the values if they are not sure. Review the coins a second time to quiz them on the name and value. (For fun, put a picture of a chicken in the mix. When the kids laugh and say that is not money lead into a conversation of what money is.)
- Before beginning the decorating activity, explain ways kids can save, share and spend money using corresponding visuals.
Decorating Explanation
- Explain to the students how each tube is a certain color: green, yellow and red. Explain what each color is going to mean (green means spend, red means save, and yellow means share).
- To reinforce, use the red, green and yellow flashcards to hold up and ask the students to say what each color represents (i.e. green means save).
- Pass out three tubes for each student to decorate (Note: these should be assembled before giving the presentation with the color labels already on them).
- Pass out materials for decorating the tubes and assist students when needed.
- After the students are finished decorating the tubes, go around the room and ask each student to share one way they will use their money.
- At the end of the presentation, give each student a handout with the “Quarter, Nickel, Dime and Penny” poem and any other information you wish to add. Give the teacher an evaluation form and parent letters to send home with each student.
