LANSING, MI (Nov.28, 2011) – When economic times get tough, the right financial advice becomes all the more critical. That’s why experienced Michigan credit union financial counselors have come together to share their best practices and financial counseling program details in a guide called “Financial Counseling Best Practices” which is now available on the MCUL website, www.mcul.org.
The guide was compiled by a working group of credit union financial counselors who are members of the MCUL & Affiliates’ Financial Education Council. By gathering best practices into one easily accessible guide, credit unions have the resources they need to implement new or improve current financial counseling programs and better serve their members.
“Credit unions understand that when we help our members improve their financial literacy, we help them improve their lives as a whole,” said David Adams, CEO of MCUL & Affiliates. “The financial best practices guide is yet another tool we provide to assist credit unions meet members’ needs.”
The best practices guide includes program details and real-life operational experiences of several Michigan credit unions. Credit unions just starting out in financial counseling will find the information useful in creating their program, while credit unions that have already established a program will gain deeper insights into best practices that can supplement their program.
The guide is just one of many ways MCUL is reaching out to credit unions on the financial counseling front, in an effort to balance the consumer’s need for trustworthy financial advice with tight credit union budgets for training staff. MCUL has for the past two years offered a guided self-study financial counseling training program attended by 180 credit union staff seeking to become Certified Credit Union Financial Counselors.
