MCUL Announces Endorsement of Snyder Re-election Bid (Misc News: February 3, 2014)
MCUL & Affiliates today announces its endorsement of Gov. Rick Snyder on the same day he is announcing his re-election bid.
“Since his election in 2010, Gov. Rick Snyder has consistently shown his support for credit unions, our not-for-profit structure, and Michigan’s financial services industry as a whole,” MCUL & Affiliates CEO David Adams said. “As governor, Snyder has worked with Michigan’s credit unions and other lenders to build a common-sense regulatory structure that allows credit unions to best serve Main Street businesses and members. Gov. Snyder’s continued leadership will enhance the economic revitalization of Michigan and we strongly support his re-election.
“Gov. Snyder has demonstrated his commitment to the important role of local lenders and credit unions in strengthening our economy by making credit available to consumers and small businesses,” Adams added. “He has also consistently pushed back against unnecessary government regulations and policies that would further restrict access to credit for Michigan families and businesses. MCUL believes that these issues will be critical as Main Street credit unions continue to serve their local members and communities.”
In a letter to credit union CEOs, Adams said MCUL was able to make the early endorsement because both the league board and MCULAF/MCULLAF trustees had voted to back Snyder conditional on his decision to seek re-election.
Prior to making the decision, the MCULAF/MCULLAF trustees solicited comments from credit union leaders and found strong consensus that the industry should support Snyder based on his track record of support for credit unions, credit union issues and the credit union philosophy. In particular, Snyder has actively supported and defended credit unions in the form of:
- Preserving our state-level tax exemption during the Michigan Business Tax rewrite
- Actively accounting for the credit union perspective on initiatives to prevent and deter blight
- Changes to eliminate outdated campaign finance restrictions on credit union fundraising
- Reductions to unnecessary regulatory burdens related to the foreclosure process
- Support for and enactment of anti-fraud measures on card skimming
MCUL has a strong record for bi-partisan endorsements. As an example, MCUL also gave its early endorsement to Democrat U.S. Rep. Gary Peters in his run for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat.
