Detroit News Features Credit Unions in Defibrillator Story (Misc News: January 13, 2014)
The Detroit News has a lengthy story in its Lifestyle section about companies that are installing defibrillators that features Michigan credit unions throughout the story.
In November, MCUL & Affiliates started a program to help Michigan credit unions buy defibrillators at a discount for installation in their branches.
The impetus for the program was when Jon Looman, CEO of Community West CU, was in a stationary bike class at his local YMCA when he started experiencing chest pains. As it turns out, he was having a heart attack. He credits the YMCA staff for their quick action – and the YMCA for having installed the automatic external defibrillator or AED.
“I was very fortunate that there were people in the class who knew CPR and the folks at the YMCA responded quickly, putting an AED unit on me,” Looman told the newspaper.
