DontTaxMyCU Tuesday a Big Success (Misc News: September 12, 2013)
Don’t Tax My Credit Union Tuesday was such a big success, CUNA’s servers crashed twice during the day. In fact, it was a bigger success than the first Don’t Tax My Credit Union Tuesday in July.
The association said that it counted more than 5,000 Twitter and 600 Facebook posts with more than 4,800 posts specifically aimed at Twitter accounts of members of Congress.
CUNA orchestrated a social media blitz to make sure Congress heard the Don’t Tax My Credit Union message loud and clear.
The effort was timed to coincide with Congress’s return from the August recess.
CUNA estimates that as many as 1 million social media users were exposed to the credit union message on Tuesday. As many as 3 million people have now been exposed to the message on social media platforms.
Credit unions made so much noise that #DontTaxMyCU was at one point trending in the Midwest – that is, the campaign was among the most-tweeted topics on Twitter.
In addition, the DontTaxMyCreditUnion.org website saw more than 69,000 page views on Tuesday, nearly seven times the daily average. Seventy percent of the nearly 23,000 unique visitors were first-time visitors to the site – credit union members newly engaged in our campaign.
Even though the focus was on social media, more than 8,000 contacts were delivered to the Hill the “old-fashioned” way – via email.
Throughout the day, our lobbyists on the Hill reported hearing that Congressional offices were being inundated with tweets. Members of Congress and staffers applauded the campaign and encouraged the movement to continue its efforts to advocate on behalf of credit unions.
