MCUL, CUs Kick off 2012 Kidney Walk Effort   (Misc News: March 16, 2012)

For the second year in a row, MCUL & Affiliates CEO David Adams will serve as honorary chair for the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan’s Kidney Walk at the Detroit Zoo, and he joined with several Michigan credit unions and other participants to kick off the fundraising effort this week.

The kickoff event was at Schoolcraft College in Livonia and featured opening remarks from Adams who shared the success of last year’s effort with the crowd. Adams noted how kidney disease, which is estimated to impact one of eight Michigan residents, has had a personal impact on members of his staff as well as his own family.

“It means a lot to my organization to be part of such a meaningful effort,” Adams told the crowd. “Helping others is at the heart of who we are as a credit union community.”

Mickie Borucki, who works at Christian Financial CU, also spoke at the event, sharing the emotional story of her family’s struggle with kidney disease. Borucki’s sister underwent a successful kidney transplant 25 years ago, but recently lost her brother after a 33-year battle with the disease.

“Arthur’s story is one of courage and hope,” Borucki said, explaining how with help from the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, her brother was able to live a full and productive life despite his multiple transplant operations, years of dialysis and even the amputation of his legs.

Last year, the walk raised more than $300,000 to support the NKFM’s prevention programs and patient services throughout Michigan, with MCUL & Affiliates and several southeast Michigan credit unions together contributing more than $47,000.

MCUL & Affiliates will once again be a major corporate sponsor of the Detroit Zoo Walk, which will take place on Sunday, May 20. Several credit unions have pledged their support as well, including Christian Financial CU, Detroit Metropolitan CU, Shore to Shore Community FCU, Michigan First CU, Advantage One FCU, Good Shepard CU and Downriver Community FCU.
