With banks slapping on fees and thousands of people vowing to move their money to a credit union on Nov. 5, now is the time to spread the word: "Every day is a great day to own your money at a credit union."
Michigan consumers aren’t waiting until “Bank Transfer Day” – the national movement to protest increasing fees at the country's big banks – to make the switch to a credit union, and that’s why MCUL & Affiliates has launched a media campaign to make sure your story is heard.
This is a story with staying power, as the general undercurrent of frustration with big banks that is driving many consumers to credit unions isn’t limited to one day. We’ve prepared a press kit to help highlight new member inquiries and account openings at your credit union, and we’re ready to help you reach out to the media in whatever way you need. The kit contains a customizable press release, a Q&A for background, and talking points to help communicate our core message.
Don’t think the banks aren’t taking note of their former customers who have made the switch to credit unions. In a drastic about-face, Bank of America announced it is nixing plans to charge a $5 debit card fee starting in 2012, and Chase and Wells Fargo are backing away from some of their planned fees as well. At this point, regardless of what the banks decide it’s not likely to stem the tide of anger. The fees have been a public relations disaster for the banks and a golden opportunity for credit unions.
