MCULAF-Endorsed Candidates Win 93% of Primary Elections (Monitor: August 9, 2010)
The continued political growth and influence of the credit union movement was on display with a strong showing for MCULAF endorsed candidates in the Aug. 3 primary elections. A strong 93 percent of endorsed candidates won their primary contests and will continue to the general election in November. Highlights included 22 of 24 state Senate victories and 58 of 59 state House victories. All of the 12 state House incumbents facing primary challenges were victorious. A full summary of results in races where MCULAF endorsed a candidate is available on our elections page.
The MCUL endorsed second-place Republican gubernatorial primary finisher Rep. Pete Hoekstra, gaining visibility and respect because of a principled approach to selecting and supporting the candidate. The MCUL's endorsement and financial support also showed our strength to other lawmakers in Lansing and beyond. On the congressional side, the league made 14 federal endorsements of which 11 advanced successfully. The MCUL will be reaching out soon to those who we did not endorse, asking for their support of Michigan credit unions to ensure we continue to have strong relations with the majority of our congressional delegation members.
The PAC's bipartisan candidates have shown support for credit unions and their issues with voting records as well as questionnaires. The PAC support provided by member credit unions continues to play an increasingly important role in our efforts.
