Community Reinvestment Initiative (CRI) Measurement and Documentation

One of the important outcomes of CRI is the ability to provide detail as to the impact of Michigan credit unions through the CRI report.  In order to create the CRI report data is gathered from credit unions through and annual CRI survey. The survey data is used to compile the CRI report which highlights the work Michigan credit unions are doing to assist their members and communities.

The data gathering process includes the following elements:

CRI Survey

An online questionnaire, the CRI survey measures credit union activities in six strategic areas: lending, financial education, affordable financial services, community involvement, student loans and shared branching.  While paper copies of the survey are available upon request, the ability to complete the survey online expedites the data gathering process and is environmentally friendly.

Use of External Data Sources

Other relevant data sources are used to supplement the data collected in the CRI Survey. The National Credit Union Administration's (NCUA) 5300 Call Report data is a major source of information used. From it loan, assets, members, shares, and other similar data points are blended into the questionnaire survey results. The Credit Union National Association (CUNA), U.S. Census Bureau, the MCUL, DataTrac, and the National Youth Involvement Board (NYIB) are also used as sources of information.

CRI Report

The data gathered through the CRI Survey and external sources is used to create the CRI Report.  The Michigan Credit Union League has been gathering CRI data and creating the CRI Report since 2005.  The report is designed for use by credit unions with members of Congress, the state Legislature, credit union Board of Directors and the public. The CRI Report is available to download from the CRI Report section of the web site.
