GENERAL EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Michigan credit union volunteers and staff are awarded nearly 250 scholarships totaling an average of $60,000 in educational grants each year through the generosity of their colleagues.
Applicants from credit unions $35 million and under in assets are automatically approved for $1,000 per year toward education; requests of special circumstances beyond that amount and by applicants from credit unions over $35 million in assets are submitted for review to MCUF Trustees. Scholarships are given for MCUL, CUcorp, CenCorp, CMG, chapter, Michigan CUES Council and CUNA-sponsored educational events including conferences, seminars, workshops, independent study programs, chapter programs, books, budgeting and ALM software, test modules, and the MCUL Annual Convention & Exposition.
To apply for educational scholarships please follow the process below that fits your asset size and scholarship request.
For credit unions $35 million and under in assets:
- If the education event is offered through MCUL, please apply when registering for the event online. The cost of the education event or training will be paid directly by the MCUF.
- If the education event is offered through an organization outside of MCUL, submit your scholarship request in writing to The Michigan Credit Union Foundation, Attn: Finance and Administration, P.O. Box 8054, Plymouth, MI 48170. Include the paid invoice for the education event along with your request. The MCUF reimburses education and training upon receipt of the paid invoice.
For credit unions over $35 million in assets:
- Requests must include a letter regarding the training being requested and the need as well as any support the credit union can provide.
- All requests by credit unions over $35 million in assets must be approved by the MCUF Board of Trustees.

CRI GRANTS
The MCUF has resources available to assist credit unions with community-based work and expanding community partnerships. CRI Grants for member financial education efforts are especially encouraged.

OPERATIONAL GRANTS
The MCUF provides support for Michigan credit unions with $35 million or less in assets through Operational Grants. These grant funds are awarded to Michigan credit unions on a first come, first served basis as funds allow. The grants are for technology and operations related expenses and upgrades that will measurably assist the credit union in serving its members. As Operational Grant funds are limited, interested credit unions are encouraged to apply early in the year to optimize their chances of securing a grant. Grants are capped at $2,000 per credit union.
To apply:
- The credit union CEO must submit a letter in writing detailing the request and how it will assist in the credit union's operations.
- Include supporting materials including quotes or invoices as available.
- Grant applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
- Operational Grant checks are sent to recipients upon receipt of the paid invoice by the MCUF.
