Plus, Guest Program: Gift Wrapping and Coffee
Jump in and help make a splash by getting into the holiday spirit and wrapping gifts for the Volunteers of America "Adopt a Family" program! All attendees are being asked to bring new, unwrapped sports gear ideal for teens. Coffee will be served and supplies provided for guests to gather and make some quick-work of wrapping these gifts to be donated to a family in need.
More About Volunteers of American "Adopt a Family" Program
The Adopt a Family program has been serving families in need across the state of Michigan since 1993. In the 20-year history of the program, over 100,000 children and parents have experienced the joy of Christmas through this special program. In 2012, over 4,000 families were served. Families apply and are screened for participation in the program. They must demonstrate need (income no more than 25% above the poverty line) and have children ages 15 and under. Learn more about Volunteers of America here.
Sponsors (individuals, families, companies, etc.) support a family for the Christmas holiday by providing at least one new toy and one new outfit for each child in the family as well as means for a special Christmas dinner for the family. Many sponsors provide much more or join together with other sponsors to Adopt a Family. Learn more about Adopt a Family here.
How to Help!
Please bring a new unwrapped sporting good item (ie., soccer ball, basketball, baseball glove, knee pads, etc.) to the conference! These are items perfect for teenagers, and are the type of donations that Volunteers of American has the most need for. During the conference, guest attendees will have the opportunity to wrap the gifts with supplies provided and MCUL & Affiliates' staff will make certain the items are donated to this worthy cause.
Are Cash Donations Welcome?
Yes! Adopt a Family welcomes cash donations, too. A financial gift of any amount will help ensure a wonderful holiday for someone in need.
What Else is Being Collected?
- $20 provides an entertaining toy for a child
- $30 provides warm winter clothing for a child
- $50 provides a filling Christmas dinner for a family
- $150 provides an entire holiday experience for a family of four
Those interested in donating new clothing to help Adopt a Family make also do so, and these items will be sent to Volunteers of America. Clean, gently used clothing is also appropriate to donate, but will be distributed to those in need throughout the year, rather than as a Christmas gift.
