Credit Union Media Resources

The current economic downturn has hit the banking industry hard.  Many financial institutions have closed in the past few months and the news continues to be tough.  Michigan credit unions are being contacted by the media to comment on their stability and the security of members' money.  Crafting the right message can be difficult and time consuming.  The Michigan Credit Union League has put together a few resources that will help if a credit union gets a media inquiry.  Credit unions are doing very well relative to other financial institutions and that message needs to be conveyed.  The resources below should aid in getting the message out to media.

Media Communication Resources

Click here for a powerpoint presentation from MCUL's CEO Media Training session on Dec. 4, 2008. It gives in-depth insight into working with media professionals; doing television, radio ,and newspaper interviews; and preparing materials to get the credit union message to key decision-makers.

Click here for talking points that highlight how well Michigan credit unions are performing in 2008.  This document also has wording on how to explain credit unions' federal insurance.  This is a good resource for media inquiries on Michigan credit unions and how credit unions as a whole are doing. (PDF Document)

News Release Templates

Click here for a customizable news release that can be sent to local media or handed out during an interview.  The release has many of the same details in the talking points above.  The release should be cut and pasted onto credit union letterhead.  There are bold areas that need to be filled in by the credit union.  Quotes from the Michigan Credit Union League President/CEO David Adams are also provided on the second page, if you would like to add them to a release.  (MS Word Document)

Member Communications

CUNA has put together a wealth of resources to help communicate to members how well credit unions are doing.  There is also literature explaining the federal funding of credit union insurance.  There are statement stuffers, booklets and a flier.  Click on the links provided and download anything you need.
